Description

Coming from a single vineyard planted in 1975 on limestone and clay soils, the 2017 San Vicente is 100% Tempranillo Peludo and was aged 20 months in new barrels, 90% French and 10% American. This rich, powerful red boasts a deep purple color as well as a decadent bouquet of red and black currants, blackberries, Asian spice, cedarwood, vanilla, and candied violet nuances. It's rich and powerful, yet also balanced and elegant. Showing more structure with time in the glass, this full-bodied Rioja will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 30 years or more. It's a beautiful wine. - Jeb Dunnuck96

This deep violet-red wine features aromas of pomegranate, black currant and jalapeño. It is smooth on the palate, with full-on tannins that offer a backdrop to flavors of black plum, Chambord, clove, anisette and a touch of mint on the long-lasting finish. Mike DeSimone - WE92

The Winery

Sierra Cantabria is a leading Spanish wine producer known for its Tempranillo-based range from Rioja and Toro. The company was founded by the Eguren family in 1870, and was previously known as Bodegas Eguren. Fourth generation Marcus Eguren is regarded as one of the country's leading winemakers.

The company is made up of several different bodegas with associated vineyards. The Sierra Cantabria winery is located in the heart of the town of San Vicente de la Sonsierra in Rioja Alta and makes a range of classic Rioja wines from 19 vineyard sites totalling 65 hectares (160 acres). Sierra Cantabria also makes a range of single-vineyard wines from the region, including the Señorio de San Vicente wine from the La Canoca vineyard in the Sierra de Cantabria foothills, which is planted with the near-extinct Tempranillo Peludo.
