Description

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino doesn't take too long to open in the glass, and once it does, it shows a nice mix of fruit and oak spice. The fruit is delivered in simple waves of blackberry and summer cherry, and there are layers of toasted nut, baking spice, dark licorice and cola. This effort feels appropriately ripe and opulent for a sunny-vintage Brunello. In preparation for its 15% alcohol content, preheat your oven for a hearty beef Wellington. Some 13,000 bottles were rolled out. - WA91

Aromas of exotic spice, blue flower and menthol waft out of the glass. Ripe and chewy, the full-bodied palate shows dried cherry, orange zest and dried mint set against tightly wound close-grained tannins that leave a firm finish.  - WE90

Obtained from Sangiovese rootstock, which in Montalcino is called Brunello.

Vinified, following local tradition.

It has an intense ruby red colour, which tends towards garnet as it ages.  Its perfume is ample, intense, and persistent with shades ofundergrowth, red jam and liquorice, ethereal after a long ageing.  It has a dry warm taste, quite tannic and soft.Combining with wild and roast meats, and seasoned cheese.- Winemaker's Notes

The Winery

Cosimo Loia's estate is situated on the eastern slopes of the hills outside Montalcino. The entire property covers an area of approximately 15 hectares (37 acres) at an altitude of 310 meters (about 1,000 feet). Originally from Benevento (in Campania), Cosimo came to "Brunello land" when he married a woman from Montalcino. He fell in love with this part of Tuscany as well, and during the 1980s began to dedicate himself to wine. Palazzo's vineyards encompass 5 hectares (12 acres) and are located next to fine producers like Cerbaiona and Salvioni. There have been major structural changes in the estate over the past few years: the arrival of consulting enologist Fabrizio Ciufoli has raised the quality level, and the production has also benefited from investment that included replacing most of the traditional casks with large Slavonian oak barrels, with a few barriques added for balance. This formula has given new life to the estate, which is now managed by Cosimo's daughter Elia.
